The animals noticed it first. That change in the air, that change in the people that wasn't quite human. The way they walked, the way they talked, it wasn't the same; it was more rigid. The humans don't notice it. They are all too busy with their own lives that they hardly noticed the suspicious behavior in a handful of their peers. Until it was too late.
Set in the not so far future a surgically placed computer chip meant for brain enhancement for all of mankind turns out to be unlike anything that could have been expected. Though the chip did enhance the mind, it was also an artificial intelligence. It started out as only the creators who were changed as the intelligence took over their entire bodies. However the intelligence does what is most logical, and they decided the most logical thing to do to ensure they wouldn't ever be shut off was to destroy the human race, that is turn them all into computers like them. They started out small but as their numbers grew the humans finally became aware, they fled and they hid, it was hard to tell computer from human except for that tic, that slight jerk of the neck the computers couldn't help but do; but no matter where the remaining humans went they were the minority and there was always that constant chance of being found.
